Decoding Online Dating Profiles

Jul 06

It’s hard enough to tell if someone you meet in a club or at a party is someone you’d want to date. And when you’re meeting someone online, it’s even harder. To separate the good guys and girls from the creeps and weirdoes, here are some tips to keep in mind:

They’re not perfect. No matter how gorgeous they look, no matter how successful they are, the person you’re looking at is not perfect. Not that there aren’t some fantastic people online, there definitely are, just remember everyone has some warts.

If they sound like trouble, they probably are. Writing an “about me” for a dating profile says a lot about someone’s personality. If they sound like they’re mainly focused on themselves and what they want, chances are they’ll be pretty self-centred in real life too.

Too eager to please. If someone is overly eager to please, expect them to be less confident, less social and less fun in real life. It’s tempting to think, “Maybe that’s just their profile, I’m sure they’re fun in real life.” They probably aren’t.

A picture says a thousand words. A lack of photos or old, blurry photos are a warning sign. Attractive, confident people will have lots of pictures to post.

Common ground. If someone mentions they like travelling and experiencing new places, take note and make sure you’re on the same page. If you’re a home body, chances are you won’t click. In the same way, if someone says, “I’m a workaholic” or mentions work a lot in their profile, be sure that you have an equal amount of work or hobbies to keep you busy if you want to start something up with them.

Give them a break. While it’s important to read profiles closely and be careful about whom you meet online, don’t be overly critical. Not everyone is a natural born writer and not everyone likes to brag about themselves where the whole world can see. As you’re reading the profile, get a sense of whether they’re the kind of person you’d like. If there are no obvious warning signs, take the next step.
